Teaching has been a passion of mine for well over thirty-five years. Prior to entering post-secondary education, I was a musician in the United States Army for twenty-four years. I spent almost seventeen of those years as a faculty member at the Armed Forces School of Music, Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek, Norfolk, Virginia.
I have a particular interest in first-year writing instruction. Here at Old Dominion University, I oversee the Writing for College Success program and teach UNIV 150. My teaching philosophy focuses on helping students help themselves. While we are not necessarily born as great writers, there is a writer that lives within each of us. As a writing instructor, my greatest joy is derived from watching students realize their potential as writers. There is no better feeling in the world than seeing the “light” turn on for a student, resulting in a flurry of writing activity.
